Exhibit A

In reading through comments on yesterday's post, some of you were concerned that painting the cabinets would wash the space out, or not provide enough contrast, or not look good with the existing counters.  (And who can blame you with that hacked up photoshop job?!?)  Soooo.......I submit for your approval Exhibit A:
The lovely kitchen of Janell of Isabella & Max Rooms.

Janell actually started out with a kitchen that was similar to mine: dark wood cabinets, very similar granite with gold tones, and a natural-toned backsplash.

She painted the cabinets a wonderful creamy color (and I'm totally not above stealing her paint colors - thanks for sharing, Janell!)  and changed out her backsplash (something I'd LOVE to do evenutally!).  The granite works wonderfully with her new selections, and the whole space feels lighter and brighter - something I'd love in my own kitchen!

Thank you, Janell, for letting me exploit your beautiful kitchen for my own selfish purposes :)

P.S.  Just one more vital piece of information that will hopefully tip the scales in my direction - my kitchen receives zero natural light.  If I was going to go dark in any room in the house, this would not be it.  It's absolutely cave-like!  Maybe I shouldn't have brightened those photos so much!

P.P.S. If you've never checked out Janell's blog, do it!  She is amazingly talented and has some beautiful, beautiful spaces (i.e. her daughter's room, one of my all-time favorites!) with some great DIY projects!

Britt...thanks for the shout out! You know, prior to painting my cabinets the universal reaction from anyone hearing my plan was shock, seriously. But all of them now tell me how great it looks, fresh and bright in a room that was quite dark before.

There were also stain issues that can be seen in the before photo, particularly noticeable when looking at the crown vs. the doors. Luckily the cabinet maker helped correct the problem by footing the bill to have the cabinets painted, which was the less expensive of the two solutions to address the problem. (The other was to replace all the door and drawer fronts.)

Good luck with your decisions! Janell

I really hope that you paint them. We have a similar situation here with our kitchen. Beautiful oak cabinets....along with beautiful oak accents and beautiful oak floors. Oak overkill! I want to paint the cabinets so much but my husband thinks it will look cheap and unprofessional.

Paint them! It will look awesome. We are adding our white tile backsplash TODAY! Woohoo! We have white painted cabinets and black countertops. I know it's going to look awesome because there is already plenty of necessary "stuff" going on in a typical kitchen. Can't wait to see the result (at your house and mine!).

I for one love the idea of lighter cabinets in a space with no natural daylight. Lovely inspiration photos.

I totally think you should paint those cabinets. It would tie in better with the rest of the house for sure. What if you did the cabinets a grey blue or something similar? You have A LOT of white going on and maybe a light color would do the trick AND offer some break from all the white.

Go for it! I can't wait to see the finished product!

I say go for it also. I would love to paint my cabinets but my husband says no so I can live vicariously through others.
